Sodium thiocyanate is a white crystalline solid that is easily soluble in water, ethanol, and acetone. At a melting point of 287 ℃, sulfides, nitrides, and cyanides decompose. Reacts with acids and strong oxidants. White orthorhombic crystal or powder, with a relative density of 1.735 g/cm3, neutral in aqueous solution.

Application

Colorimetric determination of Fe³⁺
Dilute SCN⁻ gives an intense blood-red complex with ferric ions; the reaction is the classical spot-test and photometric method for iron(III) in minerals, waters and alloys.

Titrimetric indicator / reagent for halides and silver
SCN⁻ is employed in Volhard-type argentometry: excess Ag⁺ is added to the halide sample, then residual Ag⁺ is back-titrated with NaSCN using Fe³⁺ as indicator. The same principle allows determination of Ag, Hg, Cu, etc. .

Gravimetric analysis
Precipitation of insoluble thiocyanates (AgSCN, CuSCN, Hg₂(SCN)₂) provides a weighing form for the corresponding metal ions .

Spectrophotometric and ion-chromatographic standard
Pure NaSCN serves as a primary standard for constructing calibration curves that exploit the strong UV absorbance of SCN⁻ at 210 nm or for IC quantification of trace thiocyanate in environmental or biological matrices.

Chaotropic reagent for biomolecule isolation
High concentrations (2–4 M) destabilise water structure, promoting protein unfolding and membrane solubilisation; hence NaSCN is added to lysis buffers, DNA/RNA extraction kits and for column regeneration in affinity chromatography .

Preparative source of the –SCN group
In synthetic labs NaSCN is a convenient, odour-free solid for converting alkyl/acyl halides to thiocyanates or isothiocyanates that are subsequently transformed into heterocycles, thioureas or labeled probes.
