NaSCN is an inorganic salt that appears as a white, hygroscopic crystalline solid with a faint saline odor. Highly soluble in water, ethanol and acetone, it dissolves endothermically to give a clear, colorless solution. The compound is stable under ambient conditions but decomposes above ~300 °C, releasing toxic sulfur and nitrogen oxides. Manufactured by reacting sodium cyanide with elemental sulfur, NaSCN serves as an inexpensive, versatile source of the thiocyanate anion. Its compatibility with polar solvents and ability to act as a chaotropic agent make it useful across the chemical, textile, construction, pharmaceutical and analytical industries.
It is a toxic chemical raw material, and the country prohibits the addition and use of NaSCN in food processing. Unscrupulous vendors add it to milk and dairy products for preservation.

Application
Thiocyanation reagent – introduces the –SCN group into drug scaffolds, e.g. synthesis of thiourea, thiazole or benzothiazole fragments found in antimicrobials and antihypertensives.
Building block for sulfur- or nitrogen-containing APIs – converts alkyl/aryl halides to the corresponding thiocyanates that are further elaborated into final therapeutic molecules.
Source of isothiocyanic acid (HNCS) – generated in situ and added to amines to give substituted thioureas employed in antithyroid and tuberculostatic agents.
Chaotropic salt in biopharma – employed in downstream processing to adjust ionic strength and aid protein precipitation or chromatographic separations.
Analytical pharmacopeia reagent – used for iron(III) colorimetric assays and for titrimetric determination of halides in raw-material QC.

Engineering control: Closed operation, local exhaust. Respiratory protection: When exposed to dust, it is necessary to wear a self-priming filter dust mask. It is recommended to wear an air respirator during emergency rescue or evacuation.
