Sodium thiocyanate in concrete
Specification
Sodium thiocyanate (NaSCN) is used in concrete primarily as a set accelerator and early-strength agent.
Added at 0.3–2 % by weight of cement, it speeds up the hydration of C₃A and silicate phases, so concrete reaches ≥ 20 MPa one day earlier and allows rapid removal of formwork or molds.

Application
Sodium thiocyanate is added to concrete as a powerful set accelerator and early-strength agent. At 0.3–2 % by weight of cement it shortens both initial and final setting times and raises one-day compressive strength by 30–50 %, allowing forms to be struck sooner and keeping winter pours on schedule. The salt lowers the freezing point of the pore solution, protecting fresh concrete down to about –5 °C, and is therefore widely used in cold-weather concreting, precast plants and rapid motorway or airport repairs where early traffic loading is critical. It also serves as a cement-grinding aid, improving mill output and the reactivity of the finished cement without sacrificing workability or late-age strength.
