What Is Benzoic Acid

Benzoic acid is a white (or colorless) solid organic compound with the formula C6H5COOH, whose structure consists of a benzene ring (C6H6) with a carboxyl (−C(=O)OH) substituent. The benzoyl group is often abbreviated "Bz" (not to be confused with "Bn" which is used for benzyl), thus benzoic acid is also denoted as BzOH, since the benzoyl group has the formula –C6H5CO. It is the simplest aromatic carboxylic acid. The name is derived from gum benzoin, which was for a long time its only source. Benzoic acid occurs naturally in many plants and serves as an intermediate in the biosynthesis of many secondary metabolites. Salts of benzoic acid are used as food preservatives. Benzoic acid is an important precursor for the industrial synthesis of many other organic substances. The salts and esters of benzoic acid are known as benzoates.

Advantages of Benzoic Acid

Reduced Oxidation
The benzoic acid is used to help reduce oxidation in greases and lubricants, which helps to preserve its lubricating properties for longer.

Improved Corrosion Protection
When benzoic acid is used in applications like aluminum greases, it can help protect metal surfaces against corrosion. This is especially beneficial for automotive applications. Moreover, aluminum greases formulated from benzoic acid have high mechanical stability, water resistance, and dropping points.

Low-temperature Performance
Benzoic acid can help maintain grease and lubricant cohesion at minimal temperatures, making it suitable for applications in cold environments.

Low Evaporation Rate
This acid helps decrease the evaporation rate of greases and lubricants, which makes it ideal for long-term lubrication applications.

High-temperature Stability
The benzoic acid helps maintain the stability and consistency of greases and lubricants at higher temperatures. This makes it a great choice for applications in high-heat environments.

Benzoic Acid description

Benzoic acid functions as a preservative and pH adjuster in skin care formulations. It is known to be well tolerated and unlikely to cause sensitisation in amounts commonly used. It should be combined with other preservatives in order to prevent broader contamination, particularly in water-based formulas. Benzoic acid primarily serves to reduce growth of fungi. It is not considered very active against bacteria.

In 2017, the Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel looked at personal care products using up to 5% benzoic acid and ruled that this ingredient is safe in cosmetic use. When used as a preservative in skin care products, you’ll find benzoic acid in much lower concentrations, usually between 0.2–0.5%. Note: While benzoic acid can be aromatic in nature, it usually isn’t used in high enough potency to deliver a detectable scent in skin care products. Fun fact: Benzoic acid is naturally found in fruits (berries), nuts, spices and vegetables. Rich sources include strawberries, cayenne pepper, mustard, prunes, cinnamon, and cloves. Benzoic acid is also added to food products as a preservative.

Properties of Benzoic Acid

Physical Properties

Benzoic acid has a colourless appearance in its solid state, which is of a crystalline nature. The crystal structure is monoclinic. The presence of the aromatic ring gives this compound a faintly pleasant odour.
At a temperature of 130oC, the density of this compound reduces to 1.075 grams per cubic centimetre.

Chemical Properties

It is soluble in water, and the solubility at 25oC and 100oC is 3.44 g/L and 56.31 g/L respectively. It is soluble in benzene, carbon tetrachloride, acetone, and alcohols. The acid dissociation constant (pKa) of benzoic acid corresponds. Its reactions can occur at the carboxyl group or even at the aromatic ring.

Uses Benzoic Acid

Benzoic acid in food
Food with naturally occurring benzoic acid – Ripe cloves, most berries and cinnamon. Benzoic acid is used in the preservation of food. Example – Salad dressings, soft drinks, fruit juices and pickles. Usually, processed food has benzoic acid to inhibit the growth of bacteria, mould and yeast.

Uses of benzoic acid in medicine and healthcare
Benzoic acid 210 is used in pharmaceuticals. It is used as a preservative in drugs. It is also present in baby products, skin products, cleansing products, hair and nail products, soaps, bath products, detergents etc.

Production of Benzoic Acid

Industrial Preparations
Benzoic acid is produced commercially by partial oxidation of toluene with oxygen. The process is catalyzed by cobalt or manganese naphthenates. The process uses abundant materials, and proceeds in high yield. The first industrial process involved the reaction of benzotrichloride (trichloromethyl benzene) with calcium hydroxide in water, using iron or iron salts as catalyst. The resulting calcium benzoate is converted to benzoic acid with hydrochloric acid. The product contains significant amounts of chlorinated benzoic acid derivatives. For this reason, benzoic acid for human consumption was obtained by dry distillation of gum benzoin. Food-grade benzoic acid is now produced synthetically.

Laboratory Synthesis
Benzoic acid is cheap and readily available, so the laboratory synthesis of benzoic acid is mainly practiced for its pedagogical value. It is a common undergraduate preparation. Benzoic acid can be purified by recrystallization from water because of its high solubility in hot water and poor solubility in cold water. The avoidance of organic solvents for the recrystallization makes this experiment particularly safe. This process usually gives a yield of around 65%.

By Hydrolysis
Like other nitriles and amides, benzonitrile and benzamide can be hydrolyzed to benzoic acid or its conjugate base in acid or basic conditions.

From Grignard Reagent
Bromobenzene can be converted to benzoic acid by "carboxylation" of the intermediate phenylmagnesium bromide. This synthesis offers a convenient exercise for students to carry out a Grignard reaction, an important class of carbon–carbon bond forming reaction in organic chemistry.

Oxidation Of Benzyl Compounds
Benzyl alcohol and benzyl chloride and virtually all benzyl derivatives are readily oxidized to benzoic acid.

Safety Precautions when Handling Benzoic Acid

Benzoic acid is non-toxic and stable under ordinary conditions. While occupational exposure limits have not been established for this substance, benzoic acid may still pose a health risk and safe work practices should always be followed. These safe use and handling practices include:

Wash hands thoroughly after handling. Use only in a well-ventilated area. Minimize dust generation and accumulation. Avoid contact with eyes, skin, and clothing. Wash clothing before reuse. Avoid breathing dust. Immediately or shortly after exposure to benzoic acid, the following health effects can occur.

Irritation of the skin, resulting in a rash, redness, and/or a burning feeling. Irritation to the nose, throat and lungs if inhaled, which may cause coughing, wheezing and/or shortness of breath. In addition to these short-term exposure effects, prolonged or repeated exposure to benzoic acid can cause drying and cracking of the skin with redness and itching. Exposure to benzoic acid in high concentrations, particularly in susceptible individuals, may cause a skin allergy. If an allergy develops, even exposure to very low levels can cause itching and a skin rash.

Immediately flush eyes with large amounts of water for at least 15 minutes. If wearing contact lenses, be sure to remove them before flushing. Seek medical attention. Quickly remove contaminated clothing and wash contaminated skin immediately with large amounts of soap and water. Seek medical attention. Individual should be removed from exposure and immediately moved to an area with fresh air. Seek medical attention immediately.

Benzoic acid should be stored in a cool, dry and well-ventilated area in tightly closed containers. It should to be stored away from heat, sources of ignition and incompatible substances such as oxidizing agents (e.g. peroxides) and strong bases (e.g. sodium hydroxide). It may be necessary to contain and dispose of benzoic acid as a hazardous waste. Contact your state or regional Environmental Protection Agency(opens in a new tab) for specific recommendations.
