Sodium thiocyanate is a white orthorhombic crystalline or powdered substance. It has a relative density of 1.735 g/cm³ and a melting point of 287°C. It is prone to deliquescence in air and releases toxic gases when exposed to acids. It is readily soluble in water, ethanol, acetone, and other solvents. Its aqueous solution is neutral. When reacting with iron salts, it forms blood-red ferric thiocyanate; it does not react with ferrous salts. When combined with concentrated sulfuric acid, it produces yellow sodium hydrogen sulfate. When interacting with cobalt salts, it yields deep blue cobalt thiocyanate. With silver or copper salts, it forms white silver thiocyanate precipitates or black copper thiocyanate precipitates.

Application
Used as a chemical analysis reagent, solvent for spinning polyacrylonitrile fibers, developer for color motion picture films, and certain plant defoliants, among others.
In organic synthesis, it is used to convert halogenated hydrocarbons into the corresponding thiocyanates. For example, isopropyl bromide reacts with sodium thiocyanate in a hot ethanol solution to yield isopropyl thiocyanate. Similar reagents include ammonium thiocyanate and potassium thiocyanate.
Sodium thiocyanate converts into isothiocyanate (S=C=NH) upon exposure to acid. After in situ formation, it can react with amines to yield corresponding thiourea derivatives.
Used as a solvent for polyacrylonitrile fiber spinning, a chemical analysis reagent, a color film processing agent, certain plant defoliants, and an airport runway weed killer. It is also employed in pharmaceuticals, printing and dyeing, rubber treatment, black nickel plating, and the production of artificial mustard oil.
