Sodium thiocyanate (NaSCN) is an ionic compound built from Na⁺ and the linear triatomic thiocyanate anion.
The anion can be drawn in two resonance forms, S–C≡N ↔ S=C=N⁻, but crystallographic data show that the solid adopts the sodium-isothiocyanate arrangement: Na⁺–N≡C–S⁻ (i.e., nitrogen coordinates to sodium).
In the orthorhombic crystal each Na⁺ is surrounded by six SCN⁻ ligands (three through N and three through S), giving a 3-D network of corner-shared NaN₃S₃ octahedra

Application
Herbicide & fungicide synthesis
NaSCN is a low-cost source of the –SCN group. It is converted in multi-step routes to thiourea, thiazole or isothiocyanate active ingredients that are finally formulated into selective herbicides (e.g., for runway weed control) and protective fungicides.
Plant defoliant / desiccant feed-stock
The salt is reacted with alkylating agents to give short-chain alkyl thiocyanates that act as harvest-aid desiccants or defoliants on cotton and other crops; these materials help leaves drop cleanly before mechanical picking.
Pesticide synergist & stabiliser
Small amounts of NaSCN are added to certain tank mixes to suppress microbial growth and to complex trace metals that would otherwise deactivate sensitive active ingredients.NaSCN itself shows limited biological activity and can be phytotoxic at higher rates, it is normally consumed in closed-plant chemical synthesis and does not appear in the final spray solution.
Skin contact
Remove contaminated clothing and rinse with running water. Seek medical attention. For small amounts of skin contact, avoid spreading the substance over a larger area. Pay attention to keeping the patient warm and quiet. Inhalation, ingestion, or skin contact with this substance can cause delayed reactions. Ensure that medical personnel understand the personal protective knowledge related to the substance and pay attention to self-protection.
