Sodium thiocyanate (NaSCN) is an inexpensive, white, hygroscopic crystalline salt that dissolves readily in water and polar organic solvents. It delivers the strongly coordinating thiocyanate ion (SCN⁻), making the compound a versatile reagent and process chemical across many industries.

Application

Spin-solvent for acrylic fibers
45–55 % aqueous NaSCN is the standard "spin bath" medium for wet-spinning polyacrylonitrile (PAN). It dissolves the polymer at moderate temperature, then coagulates the filaments when the dope is extruded into the cold bath, giving uniform, high-tenacity acrylic and mod-acrylic fibers.

Carbon-fiber precursor production
The same solvating power is exploited in the PAN-based carbon-fiber route: PAN/NaSCN solutions are wet-spun, drawn, oxidised and carbonised to yield high-grade carbon fibers for aerospace and automotive composites.

Dyeing & printing auxiliary
Small amounts (1–3 g L⁻¹) are added to dyebaths to swell the fiber, increase dye diffusion and improve colour yield, levelness and fastness of acid, metal-complex and reactive dyes on acrylics, wools and blends.

Antiprecipitant for metal-complex dyes
SCN⁻ complexes free Cu²⁺/Ni²⁺ ions, preventing unwanted precipitation of sparingly soluble dye-metal salts during high-temperature exhaust dyeing.

Post-treatment stabiliser
A final rinse containing NaSCN helps lock chromophores into the fiber and reduces subsequent oligomer deposition, giving brighter shades and softer hand.
