Sodium bicarbonate is commonly known as baking soda. It is a common kitchen item, but is also widely used in other areas, such as cleaning, personal care products, and certain medical uses.

Application

Treatment of Metabolic Acidosis: Sodium bicarbonate is used to treat metabolic acidosis, which can be caused by severe renal disease, uncontrolled diabetes, circulatory insufficiency due to shock or severe dehydration, cardiac arrest, and severe primary lactic acidosis. It is also used in cases of severe diarrhea often accompanied by significant bicarbonate loss .

Alkalinizing Urine: It is used to alkalinize the urine, which can be beneficial in certain medical conditions .

Adjunctive Therapy: It is used as adjunctive therapy in treating hypercalcemic or conditions where alkalinization of the urine is required .

Species Application: It is applied to various species including beef cattle, dairy cattle, dogs, horses, and swine .

Dosage: The dosage varies depending on the severity of the condition and the weight of the animal. Generally, it is administered at a rate of approximately 2 to 5 mEq per kg of body weight over a 4 to 8-hour period .

Contraindications:It is contraindicated in animals losing chloride by vomiting and in animals receiving diuretics known to produce a hypochloremic alkalosis.

Precautions: Overdosage and alkalosis should be avoided. Repeated fractional doses and periodic monitoring are recommended to minimize the possibility of overdosage .

Administration: It is typically administered intravenously and can be added to other intravenous fluids for less urgent forms of metabolic acidosis
