Application

NaHCO3 is an acidic salt formed by the neutralization of strong and weak acids. When dissolved in water, it exhibits weak alkalinity, which makes it a leavening agent in the food production process.

Pharmacokinetics

After administration, intravenous NaHCO3 dissociates to form sodium (Na⁺) and bicarbonate (HCO₃^-) ions. Bicarbonate anions can consume hydrogen ions (H) and subsequently convert to carbonic acid (H₂CO₃). Carbonic acid subsequently converts to water (H₂O) and carbon dioxide (CO₂) for excretion from the lungs. The main therapeutic effect of intravenous NaHCO3 administration is increasing plasma bicarbonate levels, which buffer excess hydrogen ion (H⁺)concentration, raising serum pH to combat clinical manifestations of acidosis.

Absorption: Following oral administration, excess bicarbonate is absorbed, resulting in metabolic alkalosis and alkalinization of urine. IV administration results in complete bioavailability.

Distribution: NaHCO3 is widely distributed in the extracellular fluid.

Metabolism: NaHCO3 has an unknown half-life.

Excretion: Bicarbonate is excreted in the urine; it is excreted and reabsorbed by the kidneys. Bicarbonate is also transported to the lungs and exhaled as carbon dioxide.
