Application

Promote the entry of potassium ions into cells:

NaHCO3, as an alkaline component, can cause an increase in blood pH value through intravenous infusion, thereby promoting the exchange of hydrogen and potassium inside and outside cells, transferring potassium ions into cells, and effectively reducing blood potassium levels.
Metabolic acidosis:

When patients suffer from metabolic acidosis, the use of NaHCO3 can promote the entry of potassium ions into cells through H+- Na+exchange
5% NaHCO3 150-250 ml intravenous infusion, effective within 5-10 minutes, lasting about 2 hours.
Usage conditions and restrictions:

The use of NaHCO3 should be limited to patients with hyperkalemia accompanied by severe metabolic acidosis. In the absence of metabolic acidosis, the potassium lowering effect of sodium bicarbonate is mainly attributed to the dilution effect caused by the expansion of extracellular fluid volume.
NaHCO3 should be used with caution in patients with concomitant heart failure, as sodium ions may exacerbate the volume burden in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD).
Potential complications:

The possible complications of using NaHCO3 include capacity overload, development of hypernatremia, decrease in free calcium concentration, and retention of carbon dioxide.
