Magnesium sulfate laxative, also known as Epsom salt , is a commonly used osmotic laxative. The main mechanism of action of Epsom salt is its formation of high osmotic pressure in the intestinal tract, preventing the absorption of water in the intestine, thus increasing the volume and liquefaction of intestinal contents, promoting intestinal peristalsis, and accelerating the expulsion of faeces. After oral administration of magnesium sulfate, it has a good diarrhoea-inducing function because it is rarely absorbed in the intestine. After the magnesium sulfate solution reaches the intestinal lumen, it makes the water in the intestinal tract not be absorbed by the intestinal wall, maintains a large amount of water in the intestines, and mechanically stimulates intestinal peristalsis and defecation.

Clinical applications of it include the treatment of constipation, abnormal fermentation in the intestines, and bowel examination or preoperative preparation. When combined with anthelmintics, that also allows for easy expulsion of intestinal parasites. Typically, 5 to 20 grams of magnesium sulfate is dissolved in 100 to 400 ml of warm boiled water and taken orally once in the early morning. It should be noted that the concentration of epsom salt solution should not be too high, 5% is preferred, otherwise it may lead to delayed bowel movement. In addition, magnesium sulfate also has a choleretic effect, can stimulate the duodenal mucosa, reflexively cause relaxation of the sphincter of the common bile duct, gallbladder contraction, and promote gallbladder emptying. In the cardiovascular system, injection of this product can directly dilate the smooth muscle of peripheral blood vessels and reduce blood pressure. When used externally, this 50% solution hot compresses on the affected area, has the effect of anti-inflammatory and de-puffing.
Magnesium sulfate laxative occupies an important position in the medical field because of its high efficiency and multi-faceted applications. However, the use of its possible side effects should be noted, such as high concentration may cause dehydration, the gastrointestinal tract with ulcers, breakage of the place is easy to cause a large amount of mg ion absorption and cause poisoning.
