MAGNESIUM SULPHATE

Magnesium sulfate heptahydrate, also known as laxative salt or Epsom salt, is a common magnesium sulfate hydrate. Magnesium sulfate heptahydrate is a colourless, fine acicular or oblique columnar crystal, odourless and bitter in taste. It is soluble in water and slightly soluble in ethanol and glycerol. The melting point is about 1124°C, the density is about 2.66 and the vapour pressure is less than 0.1 mm Hg (20°C). At 20°C, 1 mole of magnesium sulfate heptahydrate can be dissolved in 1 mole of water and the solution is colourless and transparent.The pH value is between 5.0 and 8.0 (25°C, 50 mg/mL of aqueous solution.
