A study conducted at the Alluri Sitaramaraju Academy of Medical Sciences in India compared the effectiveness of dressings with glycerin and magnesium sulfate versus normal saline for cellulitis .The results indicated that patients treated with the glycerin and magnesium sulfate dressing had a faster response, with no complications observed, and a reduction in hospital stay. The study concluded that this dressing was more effective than normal saline dressing for cellulitis treatment.

The mechanism by which magnesium sulfate works in treating cellulitis may be related to its anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. Magnesium sulfate is known to have a calming effect on nervous tissue, which can help reduce inflammation and pain. Additionally, magnesium sulfate has been found to be effective in reducing swelling, which is a common symptom of cellulitis.

Another study, published in the New Indian Journal of Surgery, focused on a comparative analysis of magnesium sulfate and glycerin dressing versus glycerin dressing alone for cellulitis in diabetic patients .This research suggested that the combination of magnesium sulfate and glycerin was more effective in reducing edema, erythema, and pain associated with cellulitis, leading to a shorter hospital stay for patients.

While these studies suggest potential benefits of using magnesium sulfate in the treatment of cellulitis, it is important to note that antibiotics remain the primary treatment for this condition. The use of magnesium sulfate should be considered as an adjunct to, and not a replacement for, standard antibiotic therapy. Further research is needed to fully understand the role of magnesium sulfate in cellulitis treatment and to establish best practices for its application in clinical settings.
