Hydrogen Peroxide
- The principle of hydrogen peroxide on abscess:
Oxidative bactericidal effect:
When hydrogen peroxide decomposes, it releases hydroxyl radicals (· OH) and oxygen (O ₂), which strongly oxidize and damage bacterial cell membranes, proteins, and nucleic acids, especially effective against anaerobic bacteria such as tetanus bacilli. But this effect is short-lived and non selective, and may damage healthy tissues.
Mechanical debridement (foaming effect):
Hydrogen peroxide rapidly decomposes into oxygen bubbles upon contact with pus, and through physical flushing, removes necrotic tissue, foreign objects, and pus, assisting in improving the local environment. However, this effect is limited to superficial wounds and has limited effectiveness on deep purulent cavities, which may pose a risk of embolism.
Inhibit the spread of infection:
By reducing the bacterial load in pus through oxidation, the risk of secondary infection is lowered, creating conditions for subsequent healing.

Application of hydrogen peroxide on abscess:
Superficial abscess: such as skin boils, small abrasions and infections, when the amount of pus is small, hydrogen peroxide can assist in cleaning the surface.
Postoperative wound treatment: Short term use to remove postoperative wound secretions, but it needs to be washed with physiological saline to avoid residue.
