Medical disinfection of cleaning teeth with hydrogen peroxide:
Home whitening
Mouthwash: Dilute with 1.5% -3% hydrogen peroxide (in a 1:1 ratio) and rinse for 30 seconds, 1-2 times a week, which can slightly whiten and reduce bacteria.
Whitening toothpaste: Some toothpaste containing low concentration hydrogen peroxide (≤ 3%) can assist in removing stains through daily brushing.
Professional dental whitening
Cold light whitening: dentists use 10-35% high concentration hydrogen peroxide gel, combined with blue light to accelerate the oxidation reaction, and significantly brighten the tooth color within 30-60 minutes.
Home customized tray: 6-10% hydrogen peroxide gel prepared by the dentist, worn for 1-2 hours a day for 1-2 weeks.
Root canal treatment disinfection
3% hydrogen peroxide is used to rinse root canals, remove necrotic tissue, and kill anaerobic bacteria (operated by a doctor).
Precautions and Risks
Concentration limit
The concentration for household use should not exceed 6%, and high concentrations (>10%) require professional operation, otherwise it may burn the oral mucosa or damage the enamel.
side effect
Enamel damage: Long term or high-frequency use can cause enamel demineralization, increasing the risk of dental caries.
Tooth sensitivity: Reactive oxygen species penetrate the dentinal tubules, causing hot and cold stimulation pain (usually temporary).
Gum irritation: Exposure to high concentrations of liquid may cause gum whitening and pain.
Taboo population
Pregnant women, lactating women, and adolescents under 18 years old (with incomplete enamel maturation).
Patients with severe gum recession, enamel defects, or untreated dental caries.
