Chemical properties
Formic acid has a hydrogen atom attached to the carboxyl group, so it can be regarded as a hydroxyformaldehyde with both aldehyde and carboxyl properties. In addition, formic acid, although it has the same properties as most other carboxylic acids, does not generally or dehydrates to anhydrides or reacts with phosphorus trichloride, phosphorus pentachloride, and thionyl chloride to form acyl halides.
