Barium sulphate (BaSO₄) is an extremely chemically stable inorganic compound that is not a traditional pH regulator (e.g. lime or sulphur) in soil amelioration due to its low solubility and inertness, but can affect soil acid-base balance through indirect pathways under specific conditions. Barium sulphate dry suspension is used for single and double contrast contrast examinations of the oesophagus, stomach, duodenum, small intestine and colon, as well as double contrast examinations of the digestive tract. The viscous suspension is used for oesophageal imaging and the thinner suspension is used for gastric and intestinal examination, called barium meal examination. The thinner suspension can also be used for rectal instillation, and colonography is called a barium enema. Injectable barium sulphate gel paste can be used for bronchography and brain abscess imaging. Pharmacokinetics barium sulphate is not absorbed after oral intake or instillation into the gastrointestinal tract, and is discharged in its original form with the faeces, and its discharge time is roughly the same as that of the passage of food; it is non-irritating, non-toxic, and basically does not affect the function of the gastrointestinal tract, so it is a good X-ray contrast agent.
