Barium sulphate (BaSO₄) is a non-toxic, inert compound widely used in medical imaging (e.g., "barium meals" for X-rays) and industrial applications. However, its role in hair removal is often misunderstood due to confusion with barium sulphide (BaS), a toxic compound historically used in depilatory creams.

No – It Has No Depilatory Properties Chemical Inertness: BaSO₄ does not react with hair keratin (unlike sulphides or thioglycolates).No Solubility: Unlike barium sulphide (BaS), BaSO₄ does not release sulfide ions or break down hair. Misconception: Some confuse BaSO₄ with BaS, which was used in early but is now banned due to toxicity.May be used as a filler/thickener (due to its fine powder form), but does not chemically remove.In some formulations, BaSO₄'s mild abrasive properties could help exfoliate skin after waxing/sugaring.Older products (pre-1960s) sometimes mixed BaS (toxic) with BaSO₄, leading to confusion.That does not work alone but in conjunction with other ingredients.
