Barium sulphate is an important inorganic chemical raw material, and its most notable characteristic is its extremely low solubility in water. Under standard conditions (25°C, 1 atm), the solubility of barium sulphate in water is only 0.0024 g/L, a characteristic that gives it a unique advantage in many industrial fields.

From the viewpoint of chemical structure, the orthorhombic crystal system structure of barium sulfate and the strong ionic bonding binding energy are the fundamental reasons for its insolubility in water, its lattice energy is as high as 2350kJ/mol, while the free energy of dissolution is +58.6kJ/mol, and this thermodynamic property determines that the dissolution process of barium sulfate in water is non-spontaneous. In practical industrial applications, the water insolubility of barium sulphate brings many advantages: in the coating industry, it can provide permanent whiteness without water-soluble ion migration, which ensures the water-resistant performance of the coating; in the plastics industry, it does not affect the water absorption rate of the material, does not trigger hydrolysis reactions, and maintains the dimensional stability of the products; in the medical field, when it is used as a barium contrast agent, it is not absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract, and it has a high degree of safety.
