AMMONIUM CHLORIDE

The solution of ammonium chloride is known to exhibit weakly acidic properties, which are further intensified upon heating. It also referred to as NH4Cl, is a salt that is derived from the reaction between hydrochloric acid and ammonia. It is predominantly obtained as a by-product of the alkali industry. The product is available in two forms: powder and granules. Granular ammonium chloride is less prone to moisture absorption and is easier to store. Powdered ammonium chloride, on the other hand, is commonly used as a fertilizer base. Additionally, the product is white or slightly yellow and contains 24% to 26% nitrogen. This type of fertilizer is acidic and contains high levels of chlorine, which makes it unsuitable for use on acidic or saline soil. Besides it is not recommended for use as a seed, seedling, or foliar fertilizer, and should not be applied to crops that are sensitive to chlorine, such as tobacco, potato, citrus, and tea tree. That is sometimes used in paddy fields due to its high and stable fertilizer efficiency. It has been observed to inhibit nitrification in paddy fields while facilitating the formation of rice stalk fibre, which can increase toughness and reduce the risk of rice collapse and pest infestation.

At room temperature, that is a stable solid. However, when heated, it undergoes decomposition and releases toxic chlorine and ammonia gases, as well as a harmful white smoke. Ammonium chloride can be potentially hazardous as it may produce a white precipitate when heated, which can be toxic.
