TSP·12H₂O is a crystalline inorganic compound with the formula Na₄P₂O₇·12H₂O. It appears as a white, odorless powder and is highly soluble in water, forming an alkaline solution. It has a melting point of 73°C when it loses its water of crystallization. As a hydrated compound, it is stable under normal conditions but can lose its water content upon heating. It exhibits excellent sequestration properties, making it effective in binding metal ions, which prevents the formation of insoluble precipitates.

Its aluminum ions are able to neutralize the charge of suspended particles in water, allowing them to condense into larger particles that are easier to filter out.
