PROSPHOROUS ACID
Phosphorous acid (H₃PO₃) is a colorless, crystalline solid that is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture from the air. It has a melting point of 73.6°C (164.5°F) and is highly soluble in water. In aqueous solution, it partially dissociates into H₂PO₃⁻ and H⁺ ions, making it a weak acid. Phosphorous acid is also slightly soluble in alcohol but insoluble in organic solvents like benzene and ether. It can decompose at higher temperatures, releasing phosphine (PH₃) and phosphoric acid (H₃PO₄). It has a density of 1.65 g/cm³ at room temperature.
