PROSPHOROUS ACID

Phosphorous acid (H₃PO₃) exhibits unique chemical reactivity due to its structure, where it has one P=O bond and two P-OH bonds. It acts as a diprotic acid, dissociating two protons in aqueous solutions to form HPO₃²⁻ ions. It is a mild reducing agent and can reduce compounds like Ag⁺, Hg²⁺, and Cu²⁺ ions, often producing elemental metals. When heated, it decomposes into phosphoric acid (H₃PO₄) and phosphine gas (PH₃), which is toxic and flammable. Phosphorous acid is widely used in agriculture as a fungicide and in chemical synthesis for the production of phosphonates.
