Furthermore, oxalic acid is hygroscopic, meaning it can absorb moisture from the air, which is important for its handling and storage. Despite its utility, oxalic acid is toxic and must be handled with care to avoid ingestion or skin contact.

Oxalic acid is widely used in the cleaning and treatment of metal surfaces, especially in the production of steel and aluminum. Its strong acidity can effectively remove rust, it and other impurities on the metal surface, making the metal surface clean and smooth.
