MAGNESIUM SULPHATE

Magnesium sulfate, also known as magnesium sulfate heptahydrate, is a magnesium-containing compound with the chemical formula MgSO₄·7H₂O and a molecular weight of 246.47. It is a white powder that is odorless and bitter in taste. It is soluble in water, slightly soluble in ethanol and glycerol, and insoluble in acetone.
 

Magnesium sulphate has a wide range of applications in many fields, including industrial use. It can be used as a chemical raw material in a number of industries, including tanning, explosives, paper, porcelain, fertiliser and other industrial fields. In agriculture, the product is employed as a fertilizer due to its role as a constituent of chlorophyll. It is typically utilized for potted plants or crops exhibiting magnesium deficiency, such as tomatoes, potatoes, and roses. Pharmaceutical applications: it is employed in the medical field as an oral laxative and is also utilised in the treatment of gestational hypertension, to lower blood pressure, to treat pre-eclampsia and eclampsia, and in the management of preterm labour.Magnesium sulphate is produced in a variety of ways, including the co-production of magnesium sulphate, carbonate and hydroxide products from magnesite ore, as well as the production of it by complex decomposition or replacement reactions. These include the use of MgO, Mg(OH)2 and MgCO3 reacting with sulphuric acid to produce magnesium sulphate. The physical properties of magnesium sulfate include a melting point of 1124°C (decomposition) and a density of 2.66 g/cm³. From an environmental standpoint, that has the potential to be harmful to water sources. Therefore, it is crucial to exercise caution to prevent contamination of water bodies and to implement safe burial methods for waste disposal.
