Lactic acid is primarily produced through two methods: chemical synthesis and fermentation. In chemical synthesis, it is produced by the hydrolysis of lactonitrile, derived from petrochemical sources. However, the most common and environmentally friendly method is fermentation, where microorganisms like Lactobacillus species convert carbohydrates (usually from corn or sugar beets) into lactic acid under anaerobic conditions. This process is highly efficient and can yield either L-lactic acid or a racemic mixture of L- and D-lactic acid, depending on the strain used. The resulting product is then purified through filtration, crystallization, or distillation. Fermentation-based production is widely used for both food-grade and industrial applications.

Lactic acid is widely used in the cosmetics and skincare industry due to its exfoliating, moisturizing, and anti-aging properties. As an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA), it helps to gently exfoliate the skin by breaking down the bonds between dead skin cells, promoting cell turnover, and revealing smoother, fresher skin. This makes it a key ingredient in products like exfoliating creams, facial peels, and serums. Lactic acid also acts as a humectant, attracting moisture to the skin, which helps improve hydration and prevent dryness. Its mild acidity helps balance the skin's pH, making it suitable for sensitive skin types. Additionally, lactic acid has been shown to stimulate collagen production, which can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, contributing to a more youthful complexion. As a result, it is commonly found in anti-aging and skin-brightening formulations. Its versatility and gentle action make it a popular ingredient in a variety of cosmetic products.
