In nature, it exists in the form of the mineral barite. The natural mineral is called barite. Co-heated with carbon (pulverised coal) to 800°C, it is reduced to soluble of barium sulphide and carbon monoxide. It is the only non-toxic barium salt, which is used as a reagent for analysis, electronics, instrumentation and other industries. It is used in analytical reagents, electronics, instrumentation, metallurgy and other industries as a white pigment, agent for gastrointestinal X-ray radiography, copper melting agent, specific gravity increasing agent for drilling mud, and white filler for rubber, paper, and plastics. It is produced by the reaction between sulphuric acid and barium chloride.
