It forms complexes with ligands such as ammonia, creating [Zn(NH₃)₄]²⁺. Zinc chloride reacts with alcohols, dehydrating them to alkenes, showcasing its use as a dehydrating agent. It also reacts with metal oxides and carbonates to yield corresponding chlorides, releasing CO₂ or H₂O. Additionally, ZnCl₂ serves as a Lewis acid, catalyzing various organic reactions.
