SULFAMIC ACID

The sulphonic acid groups of many dye molecules make the coloured compounds soluble in water. Sodium dodecylbenzenesulphonate is used as a detergent. Sulphonyl chloride can be obtained from sulphonic acid and is used in organic synthesis. The (H-palm) portion of the sulphonic acid molecule can be substituted with halogen atoms, amino groups, etc. For example, sulfonyl chloride is a common intermediate in organic synthesis and analytical chemistry. Sulphanilamide is a type of anti-inflammatory drug. Sodium saccharin is also a sulfonamide.

Sulphamic acid is widely used for the removal of scale and metal oxide deposits on both metallic and ceramic surfaces. Its aqueous solution, with concentrations ranging from 5-10%, can be used as an alternative electrolyte for the removal of rust and scale, and is an electrolyte with lower environmental impact and lower toxicity. Aqueous solutions of this acid exhibit a high acidity, comparable to hydrochloric and sulphuric acids, and are effective in removing scale from equipment such as boilers, heat exchangers, condensers, piping and other commercial equipment.

Sulfamic acid is a corrosive substance and requires special care when used. Skin or eye contact is strongly irritating or causes burns, oral ingestion burns the mouth and digestive tract. Staff should be well protected, if inadvertently touching the skin and eyes, should be immediately flushed with plenty of flowing water. Store in a cool, ventilated warehouse, away from fire and heat sources, and prevent direct sunlight.
