Nature:

nh4scn chemical name ammonium thiocyanate, Colorless leaf like or columnar crystals. MP is about 149 ℃; dl. 305. Easy to deliquescent and soluble in water, its aqueous solution turns blood red when exposed to iron salt solution, and has no reaction when exposed to ferrous salt. Soluble in ethanol, soluble in methanol and acetone, insoluble in chloroform and ethyl acetate.

When heated to 200-300 ℃, it decomposes into ammonia, carbon disulfide, and hydrogen sulfide. Reacts violently with lead nitrate, chloride, nitric acid, and other substances. Flammable, but not easily ignited. It can produce toxic gases when exposed to fire.

The pressure synthesis reaction of carbon disulfide and ammonia produces ammonium thiocyanate and by-product ammonium hydrosulfide, which are then decomposed into hydrogen sulfide by desulfurization and evaporation. The resulting solution is purified and separated to obtain the product. Alternatively, sulfur can be reacted with sodium cyanide to produce sodium thiocyanate, which can then be decomposed with ammonium chloride to produce ammonium hydrosulfite.
