Dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid (DBSA) is a colorless to pale yellow, highly viscous liquid with a distinctive odor. It has a molecular weight of approximately 326.49 g/mol. DBSA is highly soluble in water, producing a strongly acidic solution with a pH of less than 1. It has a density of about 1.06 g/cm³ at 25°C. Chemically, DBSA features a sulfonic acid group attached to a dodecylbenzene chain, making it an effective surfactant. It reacts readily with bases to form dodecylbenzene sulfonates and is stable under normal conditions but can degrade with strong oxidizers or high temperatures.
