EDTA, the full name of Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid is a commonly used chelating agent, has the following main properties:

Form and structure. The form of it is C₁₀H₁₆N₂O₈. It is usually used as a sodium salt (such as disodium and tetrasodium). It is a polydentate ligand capable of forming stable chelates with metal ions through its multiple carboxylic acid groups and nitrogen atoms.

Chelating ability: it's forms stable chelates with many divalent and trivalent metal ions (e.g. Ca² +, Mg² +, Fe³ +, etc.), which makes it extremely effective in applications such as the separation of metal ions, concentration determination and water softening.

Solubility: it has a low solubility in water, but its sodium salt form is more soluble and is often used in aqueous applications.

Stability: it has high chemical stability and thermal stability, and is relatively stable under acidic and neutral conditions, but will gradually degrade under strong alkaline conditions.
