BARIUM SULPHATE

Barium sulphate (BaSO₄) is a white, odourless, powdery chemical substance that is chemically stable and insoluble in water, acids, alkalis and other solvents. It has the characteristics of high density and chemical inertness, and is widely used in many industries, such as oil and gas drilling, X-ray imaging, coatings, plastics, paper, textiles, ceramics, cosmetics, and so on.

Barium sulphate can be produced in two main ways: firstly, barium sulphate is generated through the reaction between barium chloride and sodium sulphate; secondly, barium sulphate is extracted from barite ore. Different production processes have a large impact on costs. For example, the barium mud method production process, in which barium mud is used as a scrap material in petrochemical chlor-alkali plants, has a low cost of about $700 per tonne. The cost of raw materials is one of the key factors affecting the price of barium sulphate. Fluctuations in the price of barite ore and changes in the cost of chemicals, such as barium chloride and sodium sulfate, can directly affect the production cost of barium sulfate. In addition, processing costs, labour costs and environmental inputs will also have an impact on the final cost of barium sulphate. For example, in 2021, a number of precipitated barium sulphate enterprises collectively increased their prices by RMB 200 per tonne due to the shortage of raw material supply and rising environmental protection costs.
